About the grants we offer

The British Horn Society offers two grants available to members.

See below for the details of each of the grants that we offer.

NB The Michael Jackson Scheme is not running in 2025 as all the instruments are on loan

The British Horn Society Instrument Purchase Award

What is the fund?
The British Horn Society administers this fund, which provides grants to assist with the
purchase of instruments. The fund was set up to support promising young horn players under the age of 18 who are unable fully to develop their horn playing because of acute financial constraints.

When can I apply?
Applications for the limited funds open on 1st January each year and close on the
30th April. Applications after this date will be deferred to the next application
period. Successful applicants will be notified following the next Trustee meeting after the
closing date.

Applicants are required to supply details of their family’s financial situation, along with
teachers’ references. All information supplied will be confidential to the Trustees of the
British Horn Society.

The Michael jackson Scheme - Not running in 2025

What is the Scheme?
The British Horn Society is pleased to be able to offer, for short term loan, seven horns
comprising four professional model horns and three student model horns. The Society is grateful to Michael Jackson for his generous gift which enabled the purchase of professional model horns.

The Scheme is aimed at young players under the age of 18 whose circumstances prevent the purchase of the quality of instrument needed for them to fulfil their potential. Especially, the scheme allows a space of time for young players to find funding to purchase their own instrument.

Loans will be for a maximum of 24 months. The horns are insured and maintained by BHS-agreed repairers at BHS expense. Repairs to the instruments during the loan period will be the responsibility of the borrower in liaison with BHS. Horns will be recalled at the end of the loan period for assessment and repair.

When can I apply?
Applications open on 1st November each year and close on the following 30th April.
Applications after this date will be deferred to the next application period. Successful
applicants will be notified following the next Trustee meeting after the closing date.

Applicants are required to supply details of their family’s financial situation, along with
teachers’ references. All information supplied will be confidential to the Trustees of the
British Horn Society.
